What if your dream comes true but you can’t live with it?

Rodney Mullins, a much-rejected screenplay writer, is contacted by Marc Kessler, an Oscar-winning director, who wants him to chronicle two of his productions to show how movies are made. Rodney is stunned both by this opportunity and by meeting Kessler’s wife, Gloria Holt. On a roller-coaster film journey, Kessler often ill-treats Rodney, but when Gloria appears to fall for him, Rodney believes he has a future with her.

Suspecting his wife of having an affair, Kessler asks Rodney to engage a detective to follow Gloria. Rodney does the ‘detective’ work himself, both to protect Gloria and to shore up his hopes that his own screenplay will be filmed. On their second film, set in the Amazonian jungle, Kessler becomes extremely ill. Rodney takes over directing, but finds himself out of his depth and loses the will to continue.

Two years later, Rodney sees a film, directed by Kessler. Astonishingly, he is credited: “D’apres une idée de Rodney Mullins”. Kessler stole Rodney’s script and filmed it in French. Recognition for Rodney at last? Maybe.
