Flying Eye is hoping to attract new, younger fans to Pearson's popular series with this story about Hilda and Twig, Hilda's deer fox companion. Aimed at readers aged five and over. -- Charlotte Eyre * The Bookseller Children's November Previews *
Gr 3-5-Blue-haired adventurer Hilda and her trusty but cautious deer-fox Twig set out for a day of exploring but find more than they bargained for when they take shelter from the rain in an old burial mound. Hilda cheerfully speaks aloud to Twig and some other animals who are also waiting out the storm; they can understand her, but she can't understand them. The disconnect between Hilda and Twig is poignant as he works hard to keep her safe from the giant snake he discovers outside the mound. The creature, white with pale blue diamonds and yellow eyes, is unique and feels a kinship with Twig, but presents a danger to Hilda and the other animals, so Twig must be his bravest self in his role as her guardian. Readers will understand Twig's quiet heroism as he tries to keep Hilda unscathed and oblivious. The oversized format allows for several panels per page without feeling crowded. The scenes that Hilda imagines have a bubbly border instead of straight edges. The colors provide plenty of visual storytelling, with scenes that feature the snake being predominantly blue and white, while the usual earth tones prevail throughout the rest of the story. VERDICT Fans of "Hilda and Twig" will love this fantastic new outing, which also works perfectly as a standalone or an introduction for those new to the series. -- Jenny Arch * SLJ STARRED Review *
