Eight year old Pepper sees the world differently from most people. For him, there are things he knows, things he remembers and things other people tell him. He knows his mother's phone number because she once wrote it on his arm when they went to Disneyland.

But she isn't here anymore. A man who calls himself 'Uncle Dan' claims that Pepper's mother died. Uncle Dan unexpectedly picked Pepper up during a school field trip, gave him the bad news, and drove him to rural Arkansas. Uncle Dan said they are to live together from now on. But the Pepper isn't convinced. 

He always found it hard to figure out when people are lying, but he's absolutely certain his mother is alive, and he's going to find her...
