Sylvia Townsend Warner Author

Sylvia Townsend Warner (1893 - 1978) was a poet and novelist, a regular contributor of short stories to the New Yorker, T.H. White's biographer and the translator of Proust's Contre Saint-Beuve. She was also an accomplished musician. In 1933 Whether a Dove or a Seagull, a collection written with her lover Valentine Ackland, was published. Both became members of the Communist Party in 1935, and they visited Spain twice during the Civil War. In 1937 they moved to Frome Vauchurch in Dorset. Here Warner produced many of her most important works, including The Corner That Held Them (1948).
