Facing Wolverhampton, on the other side of the valley in which lies Smestow Brook, is the ancient village of Tettenhall. Built on a ridge astribe the main Holyhead Road, which used to climb steeply up Old Hill, Tettenhall has always been fiercely independent of its larger neighbour, once in fact and more recently, in only spirit.
This community spirit also encompasses the large villages of Pattingham and Perton, the latter an ancient settlement now much enlarged on the former wartime airfield of RAF Perton, as well as the smaller village of Burnhill Green and the Patshull Park Estate.
The area is agricultural and residential in nature, in contrast to the industry of its southern neighbours. The 220 photographs in this fascinating collection rekindle memories of the old Tettenhall Urban District, Seisdon Rural District and the people and places which made the area such a tranquil contrast to the fiery holes of the Black Country.
The author spent his early years in Perton, alongside Tettenhall to Pattingham road and later lived on the new Perton Estate. This book is, therefore, a fitting companion to his other books in this series on the neighbouring areas of Codsall and Claregate and Albrighton and Shifnal.
