Decolonizing Palestine in the Digital Public Sphere cover

Examines how Palestinian social media activists use digital platforms such as Facebook, X and TikTok to resist colonial narratives and counter negative stereotypes from the media.

How do Palestinians and their global allies use online platforms to reshape narratives about Palestinian self-determination amid systemic erasure and contested representation? This book examines how Palestinian voices navigate the digital public sphere across websites and social media platforms including Facebook, X, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, tracing the long arc of Palestinian media practice from pre-digital forms shaped by censorship and external gatekeeping to contemporary counter-narratives, networked witnessing, and transnational solidarity. It analyses the effects of algorithmic moderation, shadow banning, and content takedowns on Palestinian visibility, while documenting the ingenuity through which Palestinians assert cultural identity online through digital archives, language, and everyday practice. Situating these dynamics through the lenses of Orientalism, hegemony, the politics of representation, narrative sovereignty, and digital decolonization, the book contributes to wider debates on platform governance, algorithmic justice, and decolonial futures, arguing that Palestinian digital resistance is a globally significant case for understanding representation in an AI-mediated world.

At a time when necropolitical silence is imposed on Palestinians across digital platforms, finding voice becomes the only means of survival. Through his original conceptualisation of narrative sovereignty, Abu Ayyash theorises the practices by which Palestinians create and circulate their own narratives, building solidarity and circumventing algorithmic and other forms of digital silencing. Grounded in original empirical research, the book is an invaluable resource for anyone studying digital platforms, decolonial praxis, and, ultimately, practices of freedom. * Eugenia Siapera, Professor, Univeristy College Dublin, Ireland *
This book is a critical reminder that anti-Palestinian media bias and algorithmic censorship did not begin on October 7, 2023. Abu-Ayyash traces the roots of contemporary media oppression to the historical and ongoing colonial dispossession of the Palestinian people. This book offers a timely focus on the everyday forms of digital resistance, from Palestine and beyond, that are part of the struggle to liberate historic Palestine and decolonize digital media. * Gretchen King, Professor, Lebanese American University, Lebanon *
Abu-Ayyash's timely book offers a rich and detailed study of Palestine's representation in the digital public sphere that is both historically grounded and up-to-date. His attention both to the biases of current AI systems and on strategies of resistance is particularly welcome. This book is a major achievement. * Nick Couldry, Professor, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), GB *
