New Fiction in January/February 2023
January and February are packed to the rafters with new fiction titles, from established names to new voices, reissues and beyond. It also features a trio of novels which the shop is hosting the launch for (Now She Is Witch, A Wild & True Relation, and A Spell of Good Things), as well as this month’s fiction title for our Porty By Post subscription service box, Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions. Several of the books below have started conversations among our booksellers, whether because we’ve read it in advance of release, been following its progress since its initial announcement, or just because we think the cover is pretty (we’re very susceptible to a pretty cover). Among January’s picks, Whale by Cheong Myeong-kwan, Kick the Latch by Kathryn Scanlon, and The New Life by Tom Crewe have grabbed our attention. While among February’s cohort: In Ascension, by Edinburgh local Martin MacInnes, with its intriguing premise (and, yes, its beautiful cover), is already the cause of much excitement; likewise, Jen Calleja’s Vehicle has made the ears of the shop’s poetry fans perk up; and Owlish, Dorothy Tse’s Hong Kong-set upending of the fairy-tale, seems ready-made to appeal to this staff of Fitzcarraldo fiends.
